Cernobbio

This ancient village of Roman origin lies along the western shores of Lake Como. It consists of a medieval nucleus inland and a coastal area known as “the shore,” a highly sought-after international tourist destination. Among the many monuments to visit, we highlight Villa d’Este: originally the personal residence of Cardinal Gallio, it has changed several owners over time and is now a center for international congress tourism and a luxury hotel. Villa Bernasconi, recognizable by its distinctive Liberty-style turret, was the residence of the eponymous Knight and founder of Tessili Bernasconi, an industry that brought international fame to the city.

Bellagio

Often the preferred stage for Hollywood directors, Bellagio is perhaps the most dazzling gem of Lake Como. A visit to Villa Serbelloni starts from the gardens in a maze of alleys that wind through groves with centuries-old trees, exotic plants, and rose gardens. Today, the villa is owned by the Rockefeller Foundation and hosts international conferences. Along the Como shoreline stands Villa Melzi d’Eril, of which only the Museum and the Neoclassical Chapel in the park are open to the public. The museum, in particular, houses numerous works of art and archaeological finds dating back to the 13th century BC.

Tremezzo

Literally “land of the middle,” the village takes its name from its geographic position halfway between the Po Valley and the Canton of Grisons. This location has favored the prosperity of the municipality, boosting its commercial ties with major European families and cities over the centuries. Among the many villas built by nobles and high European aristocracy, we highlight Villa Carlotta, which is open to visitors. On the first floor of the villa, you can admire works by Hayez, Canova, and Tadolini; the vast botanical garden surrounding it features five hundred different plant species that will enchant your senses with their variety of colors and fragrances.

Menaggio

Menaggio lies along the eastern shores of Lake Como, just a few kilometers from Lake Lugano. Strolls along the lakeside will offer you splendid views of the lake, the surrounding mountains, and the rich villages overlooking it. In the old town, you can admire numerous religious and civil architectures, including Villa Mylius Vigoni. Commissioned by Heinrich Mylius of Frankfurt, the villa is part of a larger complex of buildings surrounded by a magnificent English-style garden. It was frequented by literary figures such as Goethe and Manzoni and is now home to the Italo-German Center for European Dialogue.

Varenna

Founded in 769 as a fishing village, Varenna is now one of the urban jewels overlooking the shores of Lake Como. Here you can visit the beautiful Villa Cipressi, an architectural complex in late Renaissance style with Neoclassical additions and a garden of singular beauty. Villa Monastero, originally a female Cistercian convent in the 12th century, will impress you with its stylistic eclecticism, its park, and the House Museum. Don’t miss the Lovers’ Walk: a short path that winds from the Varenna dock to the historic center, offering breathtaking views of the lake and glimpses of the well-preserved ancient village.
