VILLA D’ESTE A CERNOBBIO

Villa d’Este is one of the most beloved and well-known villas overlooking the lake, along with its beautiful 16th-century garden. Today, it hosts one of the world's most prestigious five-star hotels, though it originally served as a convent for women in 1442 until Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio transformed it into his personal residence. Since then, prominent figures from various eras have had the fortune of calling it home, but by the end of the 19th century, after three years of abandonment, it was converted into a luxury hotel and took on the name Villa d’Este.

What makes it one of the most beautiful villas on Lake Como to visit is undoubtedly its Baroque-style garden, featuring the famous 17th-century nymphaeum at the entrance, from which the Viale di Ercole begins, lined with laurel and magnolia trees. A staircase leads to a double cascade of water, culminating at the statue of Hercules and Lica, traversing the gardens. Since 1928, the Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance, dedicated to vintage vehicles, has been held here every May.

VILLA CARLOTTA AND ITS BOTANICAL GARDEN IN TREMEZZO

Built in 1690 at the behest of Marquis Giorgio II Clerici, Villa Carlotta is considered one of the oldest villas on the lake. It is renowned for its vast botanical garden, part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani circuit, which hosts over 500 plant species, including citrus fruits, camellias, azaleas, and tropical plants.

It is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating villas on Lake Como to visit, alongside the invaluable art collections inside, brought by the art collector and former owner Gian Battista Sommariva, a friend of Napoleon Bonaparte. Sommariva, in contact with the best artists of his time, enriched the villa with works from his personal collection, attracting attention from figures such as Stendhal and Flaubert.

Originally considered a sober building, it has been enhanced with architectural elements such as the monumental staircase and central arches, adding an imposing elegance.

MUSEO VILLA BERNASCONI IN CERNOBBIO: A "SPEAKING HOUSE"

Villa Bernasconi is one of the most important examples of Liberty style in Italy, and is the only villa in Cernobbio open to the public, representing a significant part of the local history. Built between 1905 and 1906 by architect Alfredo Campanini for engineer Davide Bernasconi, it began as a small textile industry that eventually expanded into a large industrial complex known as the "silk citadel.

With its mysterious Liberty style, it is one of the most suggestive villas on Lake Como to discover. Access is possible through two different routes: the main one on the east side, which features a staircase leading to a veranda with polychrome decorations, and the secondary one on the south side, leading to a loggia and then to the reception hall.

The building has two floors with various Liberty-style ornaments, but what stands out most is the belvedere turret overlooking the park, adorned with stunning vegetation and decorations that keep the villa's past alive, including high-reliefs depicting the silk worm cycle and tiles with mulberry flowers.

VILLA MONASTERO A VARENNA

Barely touching the lake's water, Villa Monastero is one of the most enchanting villas near Como due to its strategic position, which captivates thousands of tourists every year. Originally a female monastery in the 12th century, it was purchased by the Mornico family in the early 17th century. However, it was Walter Kees who, between 1897 and 1909, completed the renovations and gave it the eclectic style we know today.

The botanical garden was also expanded and is now open to visitors in all its colors, shapes, and scents, stretching for about 2 kilometers from Varenna to the Fiumelatte district.

This villa is primarily a museum house, preserving four centuries of history, particularly focused on the 19th century, when it was inhabited and frequented by notable figures of the time. In 1953, it was designated as a conference center, hosting speeches by over thirty-four Nobel laureates, including Enrico Fermi, who gave some of his lectures here.

VILLA DEL BALBIANELLO: THE MOST VISITED FAI PROPERTY IN ITALY

Just a few meters above the water level, Villa del Balbianello rests elegantly, surrounded by lush greenery and the tranquility that only the lake can provide. VILLA OLMO: ONE OF COMO'S MOST IMPORTANT HISTORIC PARKS

It was built by architect Simone Cantoni in Neoclassical style for Marquis Innocenzo Odescalchi, who owned other properties and land in the area. In 1924, it was purchased by the Municipality of Como, which organized the International Exhibition three years later to mark the centenary of the death of the great Alessandro Volta, a local figure, along with numerous congresses, performances, and art exhibitions.

In 1982, it became the headquarters of the Volta Center, hosting international events.
